Founded in 1945 in Mumbai as a locomotive manufacturer, Tata Motors manufactured its first commercial vehicle in 1954 in collaboration with Daimler-Benz AG.
Tata entered the passenger vehicle market in 1991 with the Tata Sierra and in 1998 launched the first fully indigenous Indian passenger car, the Indica. In 2008, Tata released the Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car at under $3,000 AUD.
Tata Motors acquired Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company in 2004 and Jaguar Land Rover in 2008.
