What should women ask for and be aware of when they put their car in for a service or repairs.
Kmart Tyre & Auto Service Customer Service Advisor, Shara Hill offers some speedy advice.
When it comes to car care and maintenance, a lot of women lack confidence and understanding about their cars. While most of them don’t have a high degree of motoring knowledge, and rely on qualified mechanics for servicing requirements of their car, it can be handy to know some basics, like what needs to be checked and how we can best look after their cars between servicing intervals, which can help to avoid expensive repairs in the future.

Q: What does your role involve?
A: I am the first point of contact with customers. I help to explain problems on cars when they have been identified by our mechanics. A lot of women are charged with bringing in their own or the family car for service, so I think it is good to be aware of some car health basics. That is where I can help too!
Q: Name five essential car health checks...
A: Firstly, I would recommend a minor service to check the water and oil are all topped up, that your tyres are in good condition and that your wipers are working properly. We can change tyres to give you different treads depending on the types of roads you drive on. Of course the type of service you may need will depend on how old the car is and how many kilometres it has done.
Q: What needs to be checked on a regular basis?
A: Pumping up your tyres or checking the oil level doesn't require any special mechanical knowledge or muscle power, yet they are basic and important checks we sometimes overlook.
Q: Explain wheel alignment and why do we need it?
A: Alignment extends the life of tyres and makes for a smoother ride. You should consider this service before a big road trip. If you get two or more tyres replaced at Kmart Tyre & Auto Service, we will balance and rotate them for free every 10,000km up to 50,000km”
Q: What other tips would you give to women drivers?
A: Failure to check and therefore top up the car's oil level could lead to engine failure and a huge repair bill, while not checking your tyres' tread depth could mean your car is unsafe and illegal to drive.
Q: What sort of service can women expect from Kmart Tyre & Auto Service?
A: We pride ourselves on not bombarding people with jargon. Women are valued customers and will be treated accordingly. Over 50 of our stores have a female Customer Service Advisor to assist with any queries customers may have and all our workmanship is covered by our Australia-wide guarantee.
