Environmental Driving
Cars that make the biggest impact on the environment are generally old or poorly maintained. You can help make a positive effect on the environment by maintaining your car. This will also save you money on your petrol bill. To find out about car servicing click here.
Braking Distances
You should always keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. If you need to brake when you're traveling 60km/h, your car travels about 10 metres before your brain can react. If you are traveling 100km/h, your car travels about 18 metres before your brain can react. To find out about braking systems click here.
Driving in the Wet
Be careful when driving on wet surfaces. At 80km/h, your car's tyres have a thousandth of a second to clear away the water and provide road adhesion. Tyres will naturally 'ride' over the water rather than penetrate the film of water on the road. It can be like skating on ice. To find out about tyres click here.
Driving in Fog
If you're driving in foggy conditions, don't use your high beams. They cause a 'white-out' effect, which drastically reduces your vision.
Save Petrol
To save petrol, don't pump your accelerator when the engine's cold. It is more fuel efficient to drive off immediately in the morning, but don't attempt higher speeds until the engine's warm. If you have an automatic car, you should drive off as soon as the engine's running smoothly.
