What to do if your car is in an accident or incident Follow these simple steps to minimise risk and get yourself back on the road as quickly as possible.
1. Prevent any further damage
Safety is the top priority. It is important to minimise harm to yourself and other people by:
- Moving your car out of the flow of traffic, if it is safe to do so
- Keeping yourself and other people a safe distance from the scene
2. Call emergency services
Call 000 for an ambulance if anyone has been seriously hurt; and call the police if:
- Your car has hit something (e.g. another car, a person, a building or a street sign)
- The accident or incident is causing a direct danger to the public (e.g. a car is leaking fuel onto the road)
- Your car, or something in it, has been stolen
- Someone tried to steal your car, or something in it
- Someone has deliberately damaged your car (e.g. broken windows or scratched panels)
3. Call us
As soon as everyone’s safe and the appropriate emergency services have been contacted, call us on 1300 590 766, even if you’re not sure if you want or need to make a claim. We’ll let you know what your options are.
To help us accurately assess the situation, please do not do anything else until you speak to us, Please do not:
- Dispose of the car
- Begin repairs
- Clean your car if it was involved in a fire
- Buy a replacement (if your car or something in it was stolen)
By talking to us first, we’ll be able to do everything we can to make the process as smooth as possible.
When you contact us after the accident or incident, we can tell you:
- What you’re covered for
- Your excess if you decide to claim
- Whether you’re eligible for a hire car or other services
If you decide to lodge a claim, we will work out whether your car (or something in it) needs to be repaired or replaced.
In the case of repair, you can use one of our authorised repairers (in which case the lifetime guarantee applies) or your own licensed repairer (as long as it doesn’t cost more). We can also arrange for your car to be towed to the repairer.
If a replacement is required, we will talk to you about the options available.
To make a claim, you will need the following information:
- Your policy number
- Your car’s registration
- The driver’s details (name, address and license number)
- Detailed information about what happened, including the damage to your car and other cars and property
